Laika behind the scenes "This Little Light" fabrication, tools and technique

Shaping/ gluing Phenolic Balsa-Foam, finishing with a flat smooth bastard file. Wonky not perfect.

Center drilling (use a sharp bit, medium speed and low feed. Plunge cut a oversize hole (larger than the brass tubing to be inserted) through the base. Notice the grey plumbers putty (2 part epoxy) ball on top? Shape epoxy with good nitrile gloves and fill the hole, working from both ends. Core the epoxy with a bit the size of the brass tubing.

Shaping and brazing brass tubing (fill the tubing with sand while shaping to prevent crimping)

Drawn and blown glass (borosilicate glass takes more abuse than "soft" glass) pierce the warm glass on both ends of the shade with a red hot rod, providing electrical wiring an access port and a pivot for adjusting the glass shade on the base after assembly

Staining/ painting glass shade interior (applying rosco colorine with a single action Paasche H airbrush. First a translucent color coat followed by translucent white both inside the shade) A vapor filter mask is a must for this paint!

Copper electroforming to the base, polished, then a electroplated brass top coat and polished again, matching the finish of the base to the tubing.

Routing wire from the base through the brass tubing to a 12v fuse style incondescent "Festoon Lamp" (Clean and tin the bulb contacts. Using a hemostat to hold the bulb by the contact acts like a heat sink to prevent damage to the filament while soldering). Festoon come in a wide variety of filament styles including LED and voltage requirements depending on themanufacturer. Over a long shot a bulb not intended for photography may display some flicker or a color (temperature) change. This may cause your exposure to drift.

Wiring what finishes to appear as a working brass single throw toggle micro switch! (in a perfect world!) The switch is not hot wired.  It will mechanically throw but the light would be controlled off frame Kuper system or DMX).

Dry brush antiquing and or sanding through high spots in the brass plating revealing copper
clear varnish over polished metal preserves antiquing and stops tarnishing

The result is a variable intensity practical that can take a fair amount of abuse on the set and really sells the scene!
